About

Our premise, as well as that of many others (e.g. Joanne Macy, Jane Goodall, Phillip Deere) is that earlier in our history humans were more intimately connected with the Earth. Over the centuries,, this connection ruptured to the point that in addition to violating and exploiting one another, humans have devolved into violating the very planet we live on.

The focus of On Behalf of Mother Earth is to support efforts that seek, especially through artistic endeavors, to meaningfully reconnect humans with Mother Earth and one another.

Meet Deborah Brenner-Liss, PhD

I was appalled that we did not learn from our own experience. Collectively, we had not taken in the science of climate change, and we did not learn from what we saw with our own eyes—how critical it is for us to tend to Mother Earth.

I wondered what COULD be effective.

In this endeavor, I seek to find “heart” ways to reconnect people with their love for Mother Earth.

I am a practicing clinical psychologist, lover of Nature and climate activist. During Covid shutdown, I was moved and heartened to see when humans drove less and flew less, skies cleared up that had not been smog-free in decades. Sea turtles returned to beaches to hatch their eggs for the first time in years as human activity had nearly ceased.

I thought for sure we would have “gotten it.”

Finding Right Balance

On Behalf of Mother Earth is the action offshoot of Finding Right Balance, also created by Deborah Brenner-Liss, PhD. This website was created to explore ways in which humans have disconnected from their intimate relationship with Mother Earth and one another, and how they might find a righter balance within themselves, with one another, and within society.

Jane Goodall’s final message to humanity reminds us to never lose hope:

"I want you to understand that we are part of the natural world. And even today, when the planet is dark, there still is hope. Don’t lose hope. If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing. And if you want to save what is still beautiful in this world—if you want to save the planet for the future generations, your grandchildren, their grandchildren—then think about the actions you take each day."
